Liberal Redskin started off the season with a mercy rule 8-0 win against Circle HS with 35:18 left in the second half.

After a large senior class graduated last year there was a lot of new faces contributing, but the expectations haven’t changed for the boys soccer team. Labor Day kicked off the season in the Titan Classic in Wichita.

Shots on goal came quickly, and the Circle keeper did all he could to keep Liberal off the board with a lot of good saves.

Diego Pavia got the scoring started 8:52 into the game off a rebounded shot.

Ariel Gaytan scored nine seconds later off a turnover on the restart to make it 2-0.

Pavia got his second goal at 21:03 remaining int he half off another rebound.

Johnny Young got his first goal of the season with an assist from Gio Barrera.

Pavia drew a foul in the box, and Josh Garcia capitalized scoring the penalty kick to make it 5-0 going into half.

The last three goals came quickly in the second half to end the game from the reserves.

Salvador Alvarez scored his first varsity goal off a rebound 1:53 into second half. Less than a minute later, Chris Pino scored with an assist from Alexis Landa, both in their first varsity action.

Gio Barrera ended the game a minute later with the assist from Chris Pino.

Liberal traveled back to Wichita for Game 2 of the Titan Class Wednesday.

Liberal displayed some of the tactics the team has been working on against Wichita South with a lot of shots being taken to carry over from Monday’s win.

The game was shortened due to weather and the 4-0 Liberal lead at half turned out to be the final score.

Garcia got the scoring started with an assist from Diego Pavia 2:10 into the game with a cross from the right side.

With the same setup Garcia got his second goal of the game and Pavia with his second assist at the 11:54 mark.

Four minutes later Ariel Gaytan scored with an assist from Johnny Young.

Salvador Alvarez capped the scoring in the first half when a cross went off a Wichita South defender and into the goal.

During half the lightning rolled in and the game was game was called after teams were sent to locker room.

Liberal (2-0) will host its home opener and first WAC game of the season today. JV starts at 5 p.m. with varsity to follow roughly at 6:30 p.m.
