Dodge City — The Liberal High School Lady Redskins golf team traveled to Dodge City Thursday to participate in the Dodge City JV Girls Golf Tournament. Since the Lady Redskins’ schedule was not full, Coach Bert Luallen made the decision to take his entire squad, minus one player who was ill, to Dodge City. The tournament had a field of 30 golfers from the five WAC schools.
“Our emphasis, this season is two-fold,” Luallen said. “For the new players we want them to do their very best, but to have fun and enjoy the game of golf. For our three returners we’re simply looking for improvement from last year as well as improvement from week to week. With that said, I think we accomplished both of those today.”
The Lady Redskins took second place as a team - only five strokes behind Hays. They also had two players medal. Scarlett Carr took the silver medal for second place and Addy Lopez took the bronze medal for third.
“I was extremely happy with the way all five girls played today and excited for them,” Luallen said. “Valeria and Maddie were playing in their first-ever tournament and purported themselves extremely well.”
For the Lady Redskin returners, they showed tremendous improvement compared to their performance in this same tournament last season. Scarlett bettered her score by 19 strokes over last year in earning the silver medal. Addy improved by 13 strokes to earn the bronze. Cali was 12 strokes better than last season.
As a team, LHS improved nearly 60 strokes over last year’s 292 score.
Angry Red Girls Golf returns to Dodge City Thursday for the varsity Dodge City Girls Golf Invitational where they will compete with Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend, Hays, Hutchinson, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Maize, Wichita Collegiate, Wichita East, Wichita North, and Wichita Southeast. Tee time will be 1 pm.
