george meadGeorge D. Mead, 93, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020 at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton.

He was born May 4, 1926 to Everett and Georgia (Dudley) Mead in Pratt.

He married Dorcas M. Forbes Sept. 23, 1946 in Liberal. She preceded him in death in 2017.

He started working at the Southwest Daily Times as a pressman when he was 14 years old. 

He enlisted into the US Army where he served in the Air Corp during the end of WWII. Upon returning home he went back to work at the newspaper, which he retired from in 1992. 

He enjoyed tinkering and had also operated a small engine repair shop out of his home. 

He was an active member of the community where he had served as a scout master with the Boy Scouts, rode with the Silver Eagles Motorcycle Club for various charitable events. 

He was a member of various organizations including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Southwest Daily Times Bowling Team. 

He had a great fascination for Air Craft and loved flying small planes. He later was a volunteer at the Mid America Air Museum. 

He also enjoyed camping, fishing, vacationing throughout the United States and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Liberal.

Survivors include three daughters: Tania Jo Zembik, Benson, Ariz., Linda Malee McGill and husband, Stan, Moscow, and Mary Lois Russell, Big Lake, Texas; son, George Douglas Mead, Big Lake, Texas; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Janet Lynn Mead; grandson, Nicholas McGill; and son-in-law, Joseph Zembik.

• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020 at the Miller Mortuary Chapel in Liberal with Pastor Don Quattlebum presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

There will be no public Visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the Mid America Air Museum in care of Miller Mortuary PO Box 826 Liberal, KS 67905-0826.
