With fouls mounting and time running out, the Lady Redskins trailed by four points in the final minute against Dodge City Friday night in The Big House. But a free throw by Audrey Gilmore and two missed free throws by Dodge City led to a dramatic three-point shot from Katie Horyna that forced overtime, and the Lady Redskins survived with a 51-49 win.

Liberal had an 11-point lead late in the second quarter before Dodge City ended the half with an 11-3 run that included three three pointers.

Dodge City continued its run early in the second half and took a 28-27 lead.

Machia Mullens made four straight free throws to give the Lady Redskins a 31-28 lead, but the Lady Red Demons  regained the lead with four straight points form Camree Johnson, and Dodge City kept the lead until the final seconds of regulation.

Horyna only had two points until the final 12 seconds when the Lady Redskins trailed by three. Dodge City deflected two Liberal passes out of bounds on the final Lady Redskin possession before the ball finally found its way into Horyna’ shans on the right sideline, and she launched the shot the electrified The Big House when it touched nothing but net.

Dodge City had one last shot at winning in regulation but couldn’t get a  shot before the buzzer.

Bree Horyna gave the Lady redskins an early lead in overtime with a pair of free throws, and Mullens added a basket before fouling out.

Liberal built a three-point led with 16.4 seconds and struggled to put the game away at the free throw line, only making five of 10 in overtime.

Liberal had a 51-49 lead when Dodge City took the final shot of the game, a  three that missed the rim, and the Lady Redskins survived.

Mullens led the Lady Redskins with 19 points, and Ashley Carrillo had 10.

Horyna only scored six, but her three was the clutch shot that saved the game for the Lady Redskins.

“I give a lot of credit to Dodge City,” Liberal coach Carter Kruger said. “They played better than us, and we stole a win. They deserved it, but our kids showed a lot of heart, overcame a lot of mistakes and battled through foul trouble. We didn’t have that all year, and then it hit us like the plague tonight.”

Aubrey Warden fouled out, and Mullens fouled out early in overtime. Horyna had three fouls in the first half and a fourth early in the second half.

“Katie got three, and then her fourth was unfortunate,” Kruger said. “But she played the final four minutes of regulation and all of overtime without fouling. We missed a lot of free throws, a lot of threes. We need kids to step up and make shots. But it was a great high school basketball game.”

And Liberal could see Dodge City again in the post season.

“If we do it will be a battle,” Kruger said. “They are a great basketball team. Their three losses are to teams ranked second in the state. They are hard to score against, and we did just enough.”
