The Midwest’s largest sporting goods chain now has a location in Liberal.

Friday, Dunham’s Sports hosted its official grand opening in the Liberal Plaza in the former home of JC Penney at 1513 N. Kansas Ave.

The store rewarded its customers over the weekend with the first 75 adult customers on Friday receiving a Dunham’s gift card, with one being worth $100.

Saturday, the first 50 people to make a purchase received a Dunham’s T-shirt, and the first 50 people to make a purchase on Sunday received a Dunham’s baseball cap.

The Liberal store is the company’s third in the state of Kansas and the second to open this year. District Manager James Haden said the local store is one of 270 operating nationwide in 23 states, with most of those in the Midwest.

“We are a full sporting goods retailer, and we sell all the team sports activities, as well as all hunting and fishing equipment,” he said.

Haden said company officials saw a need for a store in this part of the state.

“We really felt the western part of Kansas was underserved from this segment of retail,” he said.

The Liberal store will offer expanded footwear and apparel departments, a large hunting, fishing, camping and water sports area and a broad selection of fitness equipment.

In addition, Dunham’s offers an expanded selection of equipment from youth through adult, a large golf department, a broad selection of indoor and outdoor games, go-carts and mini-bikes, work wear, denim, hydration and much more.

“Any of the team sports,” Haden said. “We have something for the whole family, apparel, footwear, fishing, kayaking, boating, hunting, camping, you name it, we’ve got it for the entire family.”

Also featured in the store are big name brands like Under Armour, Carhartt, Yeti, Hydro Flask, Levi’s and many more.

In addition to this weekend’s grand opening rewards, Haden said the Liberal Dunham’s had a lot of grand opening specials.

“We have a lot of ribbon cutting grand opening specials,” he said. “Socks for the whole family, gloves, sweatshirts, boots, work boots, ammunition, safes, fitness equipment.”

Haden said the former JC Penney building was exactly what company officials were looking at for the new location.

“It was in our footprint as far as what we wanted to have as far as square footage,” he said.

Haden said much in the way of work was done to convert the building from JC Penney to a Dunham’s store.

“We did a complete remodel of the store, tore it down from ceiling to floor, and we painted it, set it up,” he said. “We brought in our own fixtures, and it took us about three weeks from start to finish after the fixtures were installed to completely merchandise the building.”

That work, though, was done in a short period of time.

“We started Oct. 25, and we officially opened on the evening of Nov. 15,” Haden said.

Dunham’s will bring up to 40 new full and part-time jobs to the community. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
