billys bowl cornhole tournament flyerELLY GRIMM • Leader & Times

Many people are finalizing plans for Super Bowl parties and other gatherings for this coming Sunday, and Billy’s Ayr Lanes will also be getting in on the fun.

Billy's Ayr Lanes and the Yellow Brick Baggers will be teaming up for the Billy's Bowl Cornhole Tournament Sunday as part of the Super Bowl festivities that will be going on at Billy's Ayr Lanes. The tournament will start at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, and there is a $20 entry fee blind draw with a four-game guarantee. There will also be a singles tournament afterward for people who want to throw some more. Those interested in participating can register through the Scoreholio app, and anyone with any other questions can contact Yellow Brick Baggers coordinator Jose Vega at (620) 309-7171.

“Going back a little bit, Super Bowl Sunday led to Billy's Bowl, which started out as a nine-pin no-tap tournament on Super Bowl Sunday, and we typically host that in the morning, and it's become very big and very highly anticipated among our local bowlers and others in the community who want to have a good time before watching the game,” co-coordinator Kelly Hill said. “That's grown throughout the years and this year, I met with Jose about one more level of entertainment we could bring to Liberal. Our missions rather aligned and since Jose's also a Liberal guy who wants to do right by the community, it ended up a good matchup. The Yellow Brick Baggers group has grown and become really successful. We talked and thought this event would be great to add to our party space, and what's more tailgating before a football game than some cornhole? And of course, everyone is welcome to stay at Billy's Ayr Lanes and watch the game, we'll have food and drink specials going on that everyone should enjoy, and it should be a good, fun day for us. We're always looking for ways to bring more entertainment to Billy's Ayr Lanes, and this is another great way to do that.”

Hill said there is a lot of excitement surrounding the event and offered encouragement for people in the community to turn out.

“It's a great addition to our Super Bowl Sunday fun, and it's been great teaming up with the Yellow Brick Baggers. We've hosted some cornhole at Billy's Ayr Lanes before, which ended up going really well and saw some big turnout. Sunday's also calling for some clouds and potential precipitation, and since we're an indoor place, we want to be as warm and welcoming as possible,” Hill said. “There's nowhere else in town that offers everything we do under one roof, and I think that's really cool for us. And teaming up with Jose, who started the Yellow Brick Baggers because he saw a need in the community and filled that need, is amazing because he also loves Liberal and like I said earlier, our missions rather align as far as wanting to do right by the community. It's just a really great addition, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how everything turns out. I know there are a lot of football fans in the community, and I know there are a lot of people fired up for the game. And with the weather forecast being what it is, people are going to want to look for somewhere that's warm with a lot of other people. And not everyone is capable of hosting a big football party at home, but that's what we do, and we're happy to do it. It's going to be a lot of fun, and hopefully later that evening, we'll see a Chiefs victory.”

Hill said he has high expectations for the festivities and added the event could become annual.

“I have no doubt this event will be a good one all the way around. This is the tenth year of us doing the Billy's Bowl tournament, and we love hosting it,” Hill said. “We expect some pretty heavy turnout, I know there are already a lot of people signed up from what Jose's told me, and there are more people signing up every day, and I expect there will be multiple signups come Sunday. Cornhole has a big following right now, and I think this event will be fantastic. People in Liberal are always looking for opportunities for entertainment, and we're happy to help support those endeavors in any way we can. In some way, shape or form, we'd absolutely love to keep this going. And maybe not necessarily on Super Bowl Sunday since circumstances always change, but we'd love to support events like this for the community. Teaming up with quality people who actually care about Liberal and want to do right by the community is what we like to do because that's what we do ourselves, just like with the Yellow Brick Road Car Show and the other events we're part of. We want to host a good, quality event for Liberal and do things right, and that's what this is about.”

Overall, Hill said, there should be a lot of fun to be had.

“We're really excited for this cornhole tournament and again, we couldn't be happier teaming up with the Yellow Brick Baggers for such a cool event,” Hill said. “And for anyone wanting to join us for the game that night, we will have food and drink specials that everyone should enjoy, and we just look forward to seeing everyone come out! Anyone wanting to know more details can visit the Billy's Ayr Lanes Facebook page. Again, we're just really excited and can't wait to see how everything turns out.”
