Investigators are still looking for answers as to the cause of a residential fire which occurred Saturday evening in Liberal.

At 8:44 p.m. Saturday, residents at 609 S. Virginia dialed 911 after returning home to find their house on fire. Fire inspector Cody Regier with the Liberal Fire Department stated that upon arrival, responders found “heavy smoke accompanied by heavy fire in the back side of the structure.”

Firefighters worked both outside and inside the home to bring the fire under control around 9:20 p.m. The home suffered extensive damage in the fire room and heavy smoke damage throughout the structure.

Crews conducted a complete overhaul of the scene and extinguished hot spots until 11:39 p.m. Trucks and personnel were back in service at 12:37 a.m. Sunday. Fire investigators returned Monday to search for evidence as to the cause of the fire, but Regier stated late Monday that the cause remains undetermined.

Crews from the Liberal Police Department, Seward County EMS, Liberal Water Department, Black Hills Energy, Southern Pioneer Electric and the American Red Cross assisted at the scene.
