A Liberal man and woman are dead following a fatality crash Saturday morning in Meade County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the accident happened around 9:45 a.m. Saturday when an eastbound 2002 GMC Envoy moved toward the center line of U.S. Highway 54 about three miles west of Meade in an attempt to possibly pass.

KHP said the Envoy then lost control and went into a skid, getting struck in the driver’s side by a westbound 2016 Volvo semi tractor. The GMC would come to rest in the south ditch, while the semi came to rest on the south shoulder of Hwy. 54.

The driver of the Envoy, 62-year-old Xavier Lemus of Liberal, and a passenger, Maria C. Castillo-Delemus, 58, of Liberal, died as a result of the accident. Lemus was initially transported  to Western Plains Hospital in Dodge City before being transferred to Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

The semi’s driver, 62-year-old Vardanian Oganes of Glendale, Calif., escaped injury in the accident. KHP said Lemus, Oganes and Castillo-Delemus were all wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
