In light of recent announcements regarding a fireworks ban in Liberal city limits, Seward County Fire Chief Andrew Barkley released a statement Tuesday afternoon which discussed the county’s position on the ban.

“Seward County has a ban on fireworks that has been in place since 1980,” he said. “This ban affects the county outside the city limits of Kismet and Liberal. The ban on fireworks has been in existence for 40 years.”

Barkley went on to say 2020 in Seward County has seen extremely dry conditions and southern winds, which have continued to dry out vegetation.

“Recently, we have had several large wildfires that required multiple fire departments from across the region to extinguish, including air support,” he said.

Barkley asked all rural residents of the county to continue to be fire wise and take precautions going into the July 4 weekend and work together to help prevent wildfire damage to local area crops, pasture lands and the livelihood of local farmers,
