Liberal High School announced the valedictorian, salutatorian and top 10 percent of the class of 2000 at Thursday night's National Honor Society ceremony.

Derek Hudnall is valedictorian, and Kati Amos salutatorian.

Hudnall is the son of Jesse and Faye Hudnall. He has participated in soccer and served as team co-captain. He was named Most Valuable Player of this year's regional championship team.

Hudnall has been involved with the Odyssey of the Mind program and was a member of the LHS team that placed fourth in world finals.

He attended Kansas Boys State last summer. He also participated in Fort Hays Math Relays and won a first-place award in consumer product testing at the science fair last year.

Hudnall has participated in community services. He served as a classroom volunteer at Southlawn Elementary and a referee for Kids Inc. football and soccer. He participated in the March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon and played church league basketball.

He is a member of First Southern Baptist Church and youth group, and he has helped as Vacation Bible School teacher and been in youth choir.

Salutatorian Kati Amos is the daughter of Dan and Karen Amos. She has been a class officer for three years, is president of her senior class, and serves as president of the National Honor Society.

Amos has been on the yearbook staff for two years. She is a member of the French Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

She participated in volleyball and softball and won several awards and recognitions for her abilities in these fields, including Most Inspirational Softball Player her junior year, Most Valuable Softball Player her sophomore and junior years, and First Team All-Conference in softball her junior year.

She was honored with the Outstanding Biology Student award. She won the local Voice of Democracy Scholarship, attended Kansas Girls State and is a Liberal High School natural helper.

Amos is an active member of the United Methodist Church and Methodist Youth Group.

The top 10 percent of the class of 2000, in alphabetical order, are Amos, Tim Cassidy, Ashley Crayne, George Diepenbrock, Michelle Ferguson, Brittney Hardy, Amanda Hill, Hudnall, Lori Isaacs, Marcus James, Trey Kilgore, Frances Knowlton, Erin Lane, Kimberly Lawson, Denita Miller, Travis Olive, Amy Ranker, Lauren Streiff, Adrian Webb, Angela Williams, Dustin Wilson and David Zainali.
