It can be hard finding the necessary sporting and outdoor equipment, even when traveling to the bigger cities.

However, Liberal recently gained a store for just that Friday with CB Sports and Outdoors officially cutting its ribbon at 202 N. Kansas Avenue.

“Here at the store, we have memorabilia from all the professional teams with the MLB, NBA, NFL, all those teams, and also some pro soccer stuff,” owner Chris Chaffin said. “We also carry NCAA fan gear, and we'll be expanding that based on team suggestions/customer demand. Then with the outdoor stuff, we have a limited supply of fishing and hunting gear, and we also have some camping and kayaking gear, and we plan on expanding more into tackle as well as firearms and ammunition. We also hope to, in the future, be able to sell hunting and fishing licenses locally, that's something still in the works. We also sell equipment and apparel and uniforms for local teams, we have the ability to order team jerseys with names and numbers and all of that. We also have the more generic overall equipment for whatever sports happen to be going on at that point, whether it's volleyball, soccer, basketball, whatever is needed. With it being spring, we right now have more gear for softball, baseball, track and soccer, and we do have all of that available right now.”

Chris’ wife, Brandie, said part of the inspiration behind the store was wanting to have a sporting goods and outdoors equipment store close to home.

“It was becoming tiresome having to go all the way to like Oklahoma City or Amarillo, Texas for our girls to get the gear they needed for their sports, they're both active at school,” Brandie said. “We've ordered golf shorts for one of our daughters online that ended up being way too large, and last summer, we had to go all the way to Oklahoma City to get softball pants, but the store we went to only had one size that wasn't my daughter's. That was the last push for us, we knew a store like this was needed in this area.”

Ultimately, Chris added, the time between deciding to open the store and actually having everything put together was actually rather quick.

“We'd originally talked about putting together our own shop a little while ago, and we came up with a concept of what we wanted, and that was about eight months ago,” Chris said. “We were sitting in our pool and talking about what we'd want to do in the future, and I was at a point where I didn't want to work for anyone else – I wanted to use my retirement to do something I wanted to do. We were talking about it, and here we are eight months later. We found this space, worked with the owners and officially took it over Feb. 1, so we've used the past two full months to officially get everything in here and ready to go for opening.”

After searching, Chris added the Kansas Avenue location made the best sense for the store’s location.

“We wanted a Kansas Avenue store front, we wanted a big space, and we wanted it to be on a corner a lot of people would drive by,” Chris said. “I grew up in Liberal at a time when Kansas Avenue was super busy and there were all types of shops and stores around here – everyone came to Kansas Avenue, that's why they built the fountain at 3rd Street by the Landmark. That type of scene just isn't there anymore, and we wanted to help bring some of that back to downtown.”

For those looking for team memorabilia, Chris added the store has plenty of that. Chris added no matter what equipment is needed, the store will have it.

“If you're in search for equipment for your young school athlete, or something for yourself, come in and check us out. If we don't have it here in person, we can order it and get it for you pretty quickly,” Chris said. “We do have a lot of equipment available on our store floor, and we can keep a steady supply. Instead of traveling to a big city multiple hours away and paying big city prices, stop here right in Liberal and we can get you what you need. And with fan gear, we have memorabilia from teams from all of the Power 5 conferences, the MLB, NFL and NBA, and we'll be expanding some of that before too long as well. Then with the outdoor gear, right now, we've got some fishing gear, we have different fishing pole sizes from small children all the way to adult, and we have everything from bait cast, fly cast, and fly fishing. We also have compound bows and crossbows with arrows available. We also have camping tents and sport tents for parents going to watch sports. We have two-person kayaks, which are inflatable and easy to store and transport. We also have regulation baseballs, volleyballs, softballs, basketballs and soccer balls, so they can all be used everywhere. We also have different ball caps for hunting and fishing, and we also carry golf clubs from Callaway and Estrada, and we also have golf tees and other golf equipment. We also have all the necessary personal protective equipment for baseball and soccer like shin guards and cups and those things.”

Both Chris and Brandie said they are excited to be able to serve the community with sporting and outdoor equipment needs.

“I'm ready to see a lot of people come in here, I can't wait to help the community get the sports gear they need so they don't have to deal with what we had to,” Brandie said.

“We're really excited to get the community in here and have them see what all we have available,” Chris added. “We're already set to sponsor some local teams, and we want to do more of that and be more involved in the community. We offer a 10 percent discount for military personnel and first responders, just make sure you have the needed I.D. We always want to support them, I'm actually retired from the Navy, so the military has a place in my heart. I also can't wait to see people in here, we want to have as many people as possible come in and get our gear.”
