No property was damaged in what local authorities are ruling an accidental fire Saturday evening in rural Seward County.

In a press release, Fire Chief Andrew Barkley said shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched to a vegetation fire on Road L, south of Road 7 northeast of Liberal.

“Units arrived on scene to find four acres with a moderate rate of spread with the south wind in natural vegetation,” he said.

Barkley said units were able to stop forward progress and contain the fire with no damage to any property.

“The cause of the fire is accidental, as a property owner was welding and had taken necessary precautions for the event of a fire,” he said. “Wind conditions kept them from being able to extinguish the fire.”

The Seward County Fire Department responded with eight firefighters, three engines, three water tenders and two chief officers.

No injuries were reported, and the department was assisted by the Seward County Sheriff’s office.
