aurora alcalaULYSSES – Aurora Alcala, 78, died Friday, May 19, 2023 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. 

She was born Oct. 2, 1944 to Manuel and Juanita Coronado Vela.

She married Daniel Alcala Dec. 4, 1975. He survives.     

She enjoyed working outside in her garden, planting flowers and tending to the yard. 

She also enjoyed sewing, making quilts, embroidery, cooking, and watching television, especially home improvement shows, cooking and game shows. 

She was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses.

Survivors also include son, Michael Alcala, Cañon City, Colo.; daughter, Donna Alcala, Ulysses; stepson, Daniel Jr. Alcala and wife, LeAnn, Pensacola, Florida; stepdaughters, Cathy Landin and husband, Michael, San Antonio, Texas, and Rita Gutierrez, Denver; sisters: Linda Dudley and husband, Darwin, Marie Fajardo and husband, Gilbert, Dora Gil and husband, Bobby, Amelia Veliz and husband, Andy, Rosa Lopez and husband, Pete, Lupe Ledesma and husband, John, Minnie Ramirez, Oralia Flores and husband, Orlando, and Olivia Cabrera; brother, John and wife, Vicki; eight grandchildren: Mia, Ava, Dereck, Douglas, Caleb, Sonny, Shawn and Scott; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ruben Vela and Jesse Vela; sister, Joanie Jaramillo; and granddaughter, Julie Alcala.

• Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2023 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, with Reverend Charles Seiwert presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses. 

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
