carolee nickelCarolee Gaye Nickel, 63, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2023 at her home in Turpin, Okla.

She was born Feb. 21, 1960 to Orville Duane and Geneva Smith. 

She married Ron Nickel Sept. 27, 1986. He survives.

She attended Sedgwick High School, where she graduated in 1978.  She then attended Seward County Community College. 

She was known for many years as a school cook for the Turpin Schools.

She was longtime member of Turpin Baptist Church.  She was a living example of Ephesians 4:32, "Be kind and compassionate to one another".  Carolee deeply loved her family, friends and community. 

She was quick-witted and always had a joke ready to use, and loved to make others laugh.

Survivors also include her mother; three daughters: Megan Stephens and husband, Kolby, Ponca City, Okla., Kaitlyn Welch and husband, Eric, Ponca City, Okla., and Cassandra Nickel of Turpin, Okla.; four brothers: Ron Smith and wife, Rosemary, Terry Smith and wife, Jana, Loren Smith and wife, Georgia, and Eric Smith and wife, Tracie; sister, Rita Friesen and husband, Ken; four granddaughters: Avery, Hadley and Kinley Welch, and Blakely Stephens; and grandsons, Owen Welch and Bentley Stephens;

She was preceded in death by her father.

• Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023 at the Turpin Baptist Church in Turpin, Okla., with Pastor Dan Cox and Brother Travis Welch presiding. 

Memorials are suggested to the Turpin Baptist Church or to Cancer Center of Kansas in Liberal, in care of the Hornung Family Funeral Home 1212 W. 2nd Liberal, KS 67901.
