MEADE – Elsie Eileen Cottrell, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024 at her home in Meade.

She was born July 15, 1930 to David Glenn Clark and Catherine Marian (Hinds) Clark Knott.

She married William Ray “Bill” Cottrell Sr. Sept. 4, 1950. They later divorced.  

She married Joe Urban Sept. 18, 1993. He preceded her in death in 1997.

She graduated from Plains High School in 1948.  She attended Kansas State University and later St. Mary of the Plains College, receiving a bachelor’s degree in social work in 1988.  

She was a homemaker and a social worker for Hospice of the Prairie in Dodge City. 

She also obtained her private pilot’s license in the 1960’s.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, serving several terms on Parish Council, and was one of the chairpersons when the new church and Forst Center were built in Meade. 

She was an active member of 4-H, most notably in dog projects and photography, and a member of several bridge clubs and ladies’ groups. She was a volunteer for the Arthritic and Cancer Foundation, 4-H, her church and community in countless ways. 

She enjoyed cooking, cleaning her home, playing cards, photography, socializing, fly fishing, flying aircraft, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children: William “Bill” Cottrell Jr. and wife, Teresa, Meade, Glenn Rex Cottrell, Meade, Diana Cottrell, Liberal, Vance Cottrell and wife, Lisa, Van Horn, Texas; son-in-law Bill Goebel, Jetmore; 13 grandchildren: Travis Cottrell and wife, Christine, Derby, Gary Cottrell and wife, Annette, Castle Rock, Colo., Candice Walton and husband, Evan, Grand Junction, Colo., Stephanie Saucedo and husband, Mario, Meade, Stacie Cottrell, Meade, Stephen Cottrell, Meade, Kelli Hillman and husband, Nic, Cheney, Abby Ward and husband, Evan, Hays, Nicholas Goebel and wife, Lauren, Hays, Sterling Cottrell, Meade, Starvanna Locante and husband, Lorenzo, Van Horn, Texas, Calise Arrazate and husband, Nathan, Las Cruces, N.M., and Devon Cottrell, Van Horn, Texas; granddaughter-in-law, Fae (Schnelle) Cottrell, Derby; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and nephews, J. Marc Cottrell and wife, Jeanne, and Kirk Cottrell.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; and daughter, Susan Marie Goebel.

• Funeral services took place Monday, Feb. 5, 2024 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meade.  

Burial took place at the Graceland Cemetery in Meade.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie in care of the funeral home, or a random act of kindness in Elsie’s memory.
