shirley johnsonShirley M. Johnson, 80, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2020 after complications from Alzheimer’s.

She was born Nov. 23, 1939 to J.M. and Selma Walthall in Magnolia, Ark. 

She married H. Keith Johnson June 10, 1961 at the First Baptist Church in Midland, Texas. He survives.

She graduated from Midland High School and later went on to receive a bachelor’s degree at Texas Woman’s University and a master’s degree at Sul Ross State University.

She taught elementary school in Texas, Colorado and Liberal, prior to retiring in 1996.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Topeka, Daughters of The American Revolution and Daughters and Founders of Patriots of America. 

She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, genealogy and cheering for the Jayhawks. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors also include children, Leslie (Michael) Hale, Topeka, and Jason (Emily) Johnson, Houston; and four grandchildren: Lindsey Huss, Caleb Huss, Jesse Johnson and Elisabeth Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister.

• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21, 2020 at the Miller Mortuary Chapel in Liberal. 

Burial will follow at the Liberal City Cemetery in Liberal. 

The family will greet friends and family Tuesday, February 18, 2020 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka. The family will also greet friends and family Thursday, February 20, 2020 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Miller Mortuary in Liberal.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3625 SW 29th St. Suite 102, Topeka, Kansas 66614. The family would like to thank Atria Hearthstone-East and Oakley Place for their love and devotion to the care of Shirley.
