frances johnsonFrances Marie Johnson, 94, died Friday, March 30, 2018 at her daughter’s home in San Antonio.

She was born May 14, 1923 to Neal and Esther (Rayl) Hergert in Liberal. 

She married Jay J. Johnson June 24, 1942 in Pawhuska, Okla. He preceded her in death.

She graduated from Liberal High School in 1941, but had also attended  school in Beaver, Okla. She then attended Northwest Oklahoma College in Alva, Okla.

She was baptized at the First Christian Church in Lawrence and remained an active church member at First Christian Church in Liberal with her husband.

She worked with her husband for 27 years at the Johnson Rexall Drug Stores. 

She was president of the Soroptimist Women Club and was the first chairman of the 5-State Fair Queens Contest sponsored by the club.  

She also was an accomplished artist and had several beautiful oil paintings

She also enjoyed being an avid duplicate bridge player. 

Survivors include sons, Tom C. Johnson (Debbie Powell), Coweta, Okla., and Jay J. Johnson Jr. (Barbara Free), Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Rozanne Schneider-Leja and husband, Dr. Ivars  Leja, San Antonio; grandchildren: Jeffrey and Matthew Schneider, Jayson, Justin, Holly, Wesley, and Christin Johnson, and Stefanie, Jay Bradley, and John Johnson; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Travis Hergert and wife, Jean, Liberal; and sister-in-law, Lila Hergert and her son Kurtis Hergert, Indianapolis. 

She was also preceded in death by brother, Donald Keith Hergert; and nephew, Donnie Hergert.

• Cremation has taken place. 

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the First Christian Church at at 920 N Jordan Avenue in Liberal.
