nancy rayNancy Beatrice Ray, 85, died Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at the Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver, Okla.

She was born July 20, 1934 to Ervin and Ruth (Hunnicutt) Smith in Tucumcari, N.M.

She married Kermit "Pete" Ray Aug. 16, 1969 in Guymon, Okla. He preceded her in death Aug. 14, 2009.

She was a graduate of Tucumcari High School with the Class of 1953. 

In November 1954, she enlisted into the US Navy where she served in Corpus Christi, Texas and received an Honorable Discharge in 1957. 

She later moved to Liberal, where she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. 

She was an avid reader and a poet.

She was active with the Turpin Senior Citizens Center and a member of the Turpin Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter, Regina Haskell and husband, Barry, Kinsley; granddaughters, Courtney Schones and husband, David, Ft. Worth, Texas, and Aspen Corpening, Scranton; grandson, Jeff Corpening and fiancée, Brittney Butler, Wilson; great-granddaughter, Hannah Schones; great-grandson, Joseph Schones; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; and son, William P Gatlin.

• Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 2, 2020 at the Turpin Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Cox presiding.

There will be no public viewing as cremation has taken place.
