steve jamesSteve Francis James, 66, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020 at his home on Lake Madison.

He was born Oct. 4, 1953 to Ken and Patricia (Stansbury) James in Sioux City, Iowa. 

He married his wife, Katie, on Nov. 18, 1983. She survives.

He was a graduate of West Monona High School. 

He worked at Iowa Beef, starting as a supervisor on the line and advancing to Personal Director.  His position with Iowa Beef prompted a move to Garden City, then to Lexington, Neb. to head the construction of a new plant there.  In 1985, he went to work for National Beef in Liberal.  He was part of the original management team at the time of the merger of National Beef and Hyplains Beef in 1993. He worked his way to Executive Vice President/General Manager, which is the position he held until his retirement in 2007.

In 2000, the pair purchased a retirement home on Lake Madison.  He loved the lake and all that went with it, and his favorite part of the lake was sharing it with his granddaughter, Kaylee, who loved riding the tube.

Survivors also include son, BJ (Ginny), Lincoln, Neb.; granddaughter, Kaylee, Lincoln, Neb.; his four-legged friend, Barney the Beagle; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Burley and Edna Grove.

• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020 at the Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel at 320 North Egan Avenue in Madison, S.D., with visitation starting at 12 p.m.  While attending, it is requested that face masks are worn. 

Burial will be in Schaller Cemetery near Schaller, Iowa at a later date.
