david romeroULYSSES – David Romero Jr., 66, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. 

He was born Oct. 23, 1953 to David Sr. and Gloria (Gutierrez) Romero in Raymondville, Texas.  

He married Carol Asebedo Nov. 12, 1971 in Ulysses. She survives. 

He attended Grant County Rural High School until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1974. After serving in the United States and Korea, he was honorably discharged in 1977. David also served for two years in the Army National Guard. 

After his service, he returned to Ulysses and enrolled in Liberal Vo-Tech and received his degree in auto mechanics. He then worked at UIP, Moody’s Engine Service, and John Deere, and for the last 25 years was employed as a mechanic with Kansas State University Southwest Extension Office in Garden City. 

He was a co-owner and operator of El Ranchito Café in Ulysses with his siblings. 

He enjoyed fishing, and hunting. 

He most enjoyed supporting his grandkids and attending their sporting events. 

He was a member of GI Forum, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Survivors also include son, David Romero III and wife, Velma, Ulysses; daughters, Michelle Romero, Ulysses, and Veronica Gonzales and husband, Jacob, Dallas, Ga.;  brothers, Enrique Romero, Ulysses, and Leobardo Romero, Ulysses; sisters: Raquel Gallegos, Ulysses, Maggie Garcia, Ulysses, Grace Hernandez, Ulysses, Minnie Fischer, Ulysses, Norma Pauda, Lakin, and Olga Pauda, Ulysses; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Juan Romero; and sister, Lydia Trujillo.

• Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2020 at Oasis Church in Ulysses with Pastor Rafael Franco presiding. The funeral service will be streamed on Garnand Funeral Home’s Facebook page via Facebook Live. 

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with military rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. 

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
