leon underwoodLeon Nathan Underwood, 95, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020 at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

He was born July 25, 1925 to Gerald and Molly (Smith) Underwood in Graham, Okla. 

He married Marvalene Nora Bryant Jan. 23, 1948 in Gainesville, Texas.  She preceded him in death Nov. 30, 2013. 

He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. He served in combat in the European Theater, during the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe campaigns.  He was awarded the Bronze Star. 

He worked for many years as a truck driver. The last 10 years of his career, he was a driver for ENRON. 

Survivors include daughter, Debra Busby and husband, Larry, Liberal; son, Gerald “Steve” Underwood, Coldwater; brothers, Kenneth Underwood and wife, Joann, North Carolina, and Darrel Underwood, Eufalla, Okla.; eight grandchildren: Kenneth, Steven, Albert, Larry, Becki, Cora, Slade and Stetson; 11 great-grandchildren: Jade, Jada, Dillon, Zach, Zeth, Katelynn, Nathan, Jace, Nora, Johnny, and Steve

He was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Toni Montes; brothers: Jerry Underwood, Wayne Underwood and Boyd Underwood; sisters: Dorothy Ogletree, Jackie Emberling and Christine Bevins; and granddaughter, Lori Busby.

• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020 at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal with Rev. Bill Prater presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Restlawn Cemetery in Liberal.

Friends may call from 12 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2020 at Hornung Family Funeral Home at 1212 W. 2nd Street in Liberal. 

Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Veterans Foundation/The Wounded Warrior Project,  in care of the Hornung Family Funeral Home 1212 W. 2nd Liberal, KS 67901.
