jodie mahanJodie Douglas Mahan of Corpus Christi, Texas passed from this life Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021 at 4 p.m. 

Jodie Douglas was born Aug. 21, 1931 to Jodie Cephus Mahan and Ruby Jane Henegar Mahan in Plainview, Texas. The Mahan family moved to Chicota near Paris, Texas and continued their farming operation in 1933.  He graduated Chicota Grade School in 1945.

In the year of 1945, the Mahans made their home in Quanah, Texas where Jodie Douglas attended High School.  He participated in all sports, excelling in football and was named captain of the football team. Jodie Douglas held the title High School Junior class President.  He graduated from Quanah High School, Quanah, Texas in 1949.

Jodie Douglas earned a football scholarship to West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas where he became President of his Junior class.  He lettered 3 years in football under Frank Kimbrough.  In 1950, he played center that won the 1951 Sun Bowl against Cincinnati.  He was an officer in the T-Club, member of the Student Council, and selected as runner up for Mr. W. T. in 1955. He also participated in boxing while in college. He graduated from WTSU with his Bachelor of Science in 1955 and Master's Degree in Education in 1958.

Jodie Douglas enlisted in the US Army and served with pride from 1951-1954. His army special training included: CBR (Chemical Biological Radiological) school at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas,  Non-commissioned officer leadership school and chosen student of the month. His post training assignments included: highest point award for physical fitness at Fort Bliss in 1953, special assignment and instructor on restricted weapons in 1952, played on Fort Bliss Falcon football team in 1953, and special assignment as Physical Therapist for the Orthopedic Wards at William Beaumont Hospital El Paso, TX in 1953-1954.

Jodie Douglas pursued his dream of teaching and coaching at many high schools including: Texas Boys Ranch, Texas 1955-1956; Happy, Texas 1956-1960 (undefeated record in 1959); Springlake High School, Earth, Texas 1960-1966, Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas 1966-1968; Liberal High School in Liberal, Kansas  1969-1970.  He also coached in south Texas in the towns of Woodsboro, Texas  1988-1990 and Bishop, Texas  1990-1993. Through his coaching years, he won more games than he lost.  He won numerous District Championships, Bi-District Championships and Regionals.  He was honored as "Coach of the Year" in 1959-1960, selected as member of the Coaches Guild Organization, and twice in the running for Regional Director for the Texas High School Coaches Association. In 1969, he earned his Administrative Certification in Public Schools degree and became the Assistant Principal of Liberal High School in Liberal from 1970 to 1973.  In his latter years, he continued educating youth by substituting in the Corpus Christi ISD area high schools from 1993-2021.

Jodie Douglas was affiliated with the following professional organizations: Phi Delta Kappa, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Kansas High School Coaches Associations, Texas High School Coaches Association, Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, Member of the First Baptist Church in both Liberal and Corpus Christi, Texas, Booster Clubs and Basketball Officials Association.

In addition to teaching and coaching, Jodie Douglas invested his time, talents, and professionalism in many different avenues.  He was a member of the Red Cross Board of Directors in Seward County, 32nd  Degree Mason, former director of the Salvation Army in Liberal, member of the Liberal Chamber of Commerce and Rotary International, auctioneer for many years, owner-operator of a farm and ranch business, President of World Land Corporation (spent time in Brazil for 10 months managing affairs), nominated by the Democratic Party for the office of Kansas State Representative 1980 and 1984,  owner and broker of 7-Bell Real Estate in Liberal and Corpus Christi, Texas real estate broker in four states (Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas), served for four years on the Liberal City Commission, owner of Corpus Christi Drivers Education and Safety School from 1993 to 2005 and delivered bags and parcels for the airlines for Corpus Christi International Airport from 2005-2019.

Jodie Douglas served as the mayor for the city of Liberal from 1979 to 1981. He was very honored by this elected position and passionately represented his community with pride.

Jodie took pride in working hard every day and his enjoyment came from entertaining others. His pastimes included flying his personal airplane, fishing, watching football, and eating food of all kinds. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, he grabbed the attention of his listeners. A quiet man of Christian Faith, raised his two daughters to always attend and be active in their church. His favorite bible story was about Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego. Memorable quotes of him are "Get my ducks in a row." "Sometimes you have to Sock 'em in the jaw." "It doesn't say, 'No Parking'". "Mahan's don't quit." "You can rest when you're finished." "While you're busy making a living, don't forget to make a life."

Jodie Douglas was married to Freda LaNell Boyles from 1961 to 1985. 

He married Vicki Lynn Reynolds in 1996.

Jodie Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Almira Mahan (died at age 3) and Elvira Mahan Beer, and his wife Vicki Lynn.  He is survived by his two daughters, Amber Pageant Mahan Wyatt (Donald Wyatt) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Leslie Rae Mahan Flores (Alex Flores) of Double Oak, Texas, by his elder sister Lillie Virginia Mahan Arney of Georgetown, Texas, and by his many grandchildren: Heather Pageant Wyatt of Abilene, Texas, Ryan Marcus Wyatt serving the US Navy stationed in Guam, Raegan Kirk Flores of Double Oak, Texas, Chandler Thomas Wyatt of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Donovan Douglas Wyatt of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Madison Rae Flores of Double Oak, Texas, and   Lauren Elizabeth Wyatt of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

• Services for Jodie Douglas Mahan took place Friday, October 15, 2021 at Guardian Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, Texas. 

Burial took place at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery 9974 IH 37 Access Road in Corpus Christi, Texas.
