LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Starley Craig, Liberal

In the paper on July 2, the school system announced they would be offering three new electives this Fall: Self-management (which sounds like on of those “improvement” books that infest our book shelves), Welding and Spanish Culture.

Not being sure what Spanish Culture might entail, I asked a member of USD No. 480’s board. I could imagine it would encompass the record of Spain and the country’s history, including the era of Spanish colonization and exploration, Spain’s wars with France and England, the dreadful years of the Inquisition, the destruction of the Incas and the Aztecs, the flowering of the arts and literature and the insatiable desire for gold that drove the country for centuries.

Turns out, the course is a language course in the Spanish language spoken in Mexico (Castillean Spanish is very unlike that spoken in Mexico and Latin America). Probably a valuable class for people who live here, although I would vote for classes in American history from the Vietnam war until today. A thorough study of the uniqueness of our form of government — a comparison/contrast between our ideals and those of other countries — would be of immense value, especially if we could quit pretending other forms of government are equally as good as what we enjoy and have built our lives on.

I object to calling a horse a cow, and I object to trying to sell a language class as a study in culture. It’s dishonest and designed to make people think it’s one thing when it is not.
