LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Malachi Abel, Life Scout Troop 73, Liberal

My name is Malachi Abel. I am 16 years old and I have just achieved the rank of Life in my Boy Scout Troop 73 of Liberal.  My goal, since I was a Cub Scout in Pack 43, has been to become an Eagle Scout. I am writing this letter to make the community aware that we still have active scouting organizations in Liberal.

Recently, events in the media have given the Boy Scouts of America Scouting organization a bad name. I want to let my community know that BSA Liberal and Southwest Kansas affiliations are still great organizations for kids of all ages. The Troops and Packs of Southwest Kansas are all a good group of adult leaders and Scouts who want to make a difference in the lives around them.

It is unfortunate that the good that our Pack and Troop are doing for the community, doesn’t capture the media’s attention. Nothing of what they have reported has ever happened in the Santa Fe Trail Council.

Due to the negative reporting and absence of positive stories, our packs and troops across Southwest Kansas have experienced a drastic drop in membership. Scouting is still a great program in Liberal and across the Southwest Kansas area.  Our Scouting programs have well trained excellent leaders who help us learn, grow, and think for ourselves.

As a Scout, I want to assure my community that Scouting is still an outstanding program for youth from Kindergarten through age 18. We have helped at many events in the community such as helping at and cleaning up after the Pancake Day Breakfast, helping vendors at the Craft show set up and take down their exhibits, helping the Good Samaritan Center clean up after a fundraiser event, and we have even helped people move.   Recently, you might have seen Pack 43 and Troop 73 at Meade State Park OK Kids Day handing out information and helping where they were needed for set up and clean up after the event. Troop 73 also helped at Billy’s Car Show by being there to assist if someone needed help. At all of the events we are involved in we try to portray scouts in a positive light.

Our community needs to know that Liberal Pack 43 and Troop 73 are still upholding the values that define scouting. A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Scouts are taught to uphold these 12 values that are important to be good citizens.  We continue to help the community in any way we can.

Both Liberal Pack 43 and Troop 73 actively meet weekly and uphold the Scout Oath and Law.

Our leaders are positive role models for us, and encourage us to do our best in everything we do and to remind us to do a “Good Turn Daily,” which I think is a great influence to have for us kids, especially in the world we live in today. Parents/Guardians of our community youth please consider enrolling your kids in a Scouting program so that we can continue teaching and helping families grow together. We kids are your future; invest in us now so that when we are grown ups we can learn to develop great relationships and make good choices. Now is the time to make a change in our future by starting with our youth.

Thank you, and may God bless you.
