After the Bee Jays allowed the Dodge City A’s to take a 7-6 lead in the eighth inning Monday night at Brent Gould Field and failed to tie the game in the eighth after getting a runner to third.

But Keaton Grady led off the ninth with a walk, and Tyce Armstrong came to the plate with the tying run at first.

But Armstrong was thinking about a tie.

He launched a moon shoot to deep left that sailed past the wall and high among the trees as a capacity crowd rose to its feet, and Armstrong trotted around the bases after delivering a come-from-behind win with a walk-off two-run shot. As he rounded third, he acknowledged the crowd with double fist pump and pointed to the fans, and as soon as he touched the plate, the Bee Jays emptied the dugout, and two water coolers on the head of Armstrong, as they celebrated the 8-7 win.

Armstrong’s big weekend also helped the Bee Jays earn a sweep over the Denver Cougars prior to the Fourth of July game including a bomb for a grand slam Sunday.

But the walk-off homer Monday lit of an eruption from the thousands of fans on hand.

“Tonight I widened up my stance and simplified my approach,” Armstrong said. “I was seeing the ball really well tonight. It’s been working for me.”

The Dodge City A’s had been working Armstrong with curve balls earlier in the game.

“Every other at-bat I got a first pitch curve ball,” he said. “Coming in to that, I was prepared for the fast ball but reacting to the curve all. That pitch was right where I wanted it. I saw the four seam grip. I took a hack at it and luckily I barreled it.”

And it was in front of the largest crowd of the year.

“It’s so surreal to see how the community gathers around us,” Armstrong said. “None of this would be possible without them. It was such a special day, having everyone out here and being able to give back the community was such a blessing.”
