The Lady Saints only shot 32 percent against Garden City Wednesday in the Greenhouse, but their defensive pressure forced Garden City to only make 29 percent of its shots, and after a strong game on the boards the Lady Saints cruised to a 59-47 win.

Seward opened with a 7-0 run and grew the lead to 12-3. But the Lady Broncs cut the lead to 14-9 by the end of the first quarter.

Seward pushed back to a nine-point lead midway through the second quarter, 22-13, but Garden City responded with a 9-2 run to cut Seward’s lead to 24-22, and by half Seward’s lead was 28-24.

Seward struggled to hit threes in the first half, but with 7:49 to play in the third quarter D’Arrah Allen drained a long-range shot to push Seward back to a nine-point lead, 35-26.

But the Lady Broncs again responded with a 9-0 run that was capped by a jumper from Keyhana Turner, and the game was tied 35-35.

Seward broke the six-minute drought with a Bri Linnear free throw for a one-point lead with 1:41 to play in the period.

Garden City had a chance to take the lead with a pair of free throws but only made one for a 36-36 tie.

Kylee Hunt was fouled and made a pair of free throws with 1:01 to play in the third, and the Lady Saints had a two-point lead.

Halima Salat followed with a three-pointer before the quarter ended, and the Lady Saints had a 41-36 lead.

Garden City cut Seward’s lead to three, 42039, with 6:59 to play. But baskets by Salat and De’Shawnti Thomas followed by a Thomas free throw pushed Seward’s lead to 47-39.

Jailyn Johnson connected on a three with 5:06 to play, and the Lady Saints had their first double digit lead of the game, 50-39.

Garden City never cut the lead to single digits the rest of the way, and the Lady Saints kept pace down the stretch to secure the 59-47 win.

Both sides struggled from outside. Garden City missed all eight three-point attempts while the Lady Saints only made four of 28 long-range shots.

Another difference came at the free throw line. Seward made 15 of 18 attempts for 83 percent while the Lady Broncs only connected on 11 of 22 attempts for 50 percent.

In the surprise stat of the night, Seward outrebounded Garden City 43-37.

Allen led the Lady Saints with 14 points, and Hunt had 11.

Thomas barely missed a double double with 11 rebounds and nine points.

The win pushed the Lady Saints to 5-2 in the Jayhawk Conference, a half game behind the first place Dodge City Lady Conquistadors.

Seward traveled to Cowley Saturday and returns to the Greenhouse for a Monday game against Northwest Kansas Tech at 6 p.m.
