The Lady Redskins moved to 6-0 on the season after a late rally lifted them to a 59-50 win over the Hays Lady Indians Friday in The Big House.

Liberal started slow and trailed 9-3 in the first quarter before a 6-0 run led to a tie. But the Lady Indians finished the period with a 12-9 lead and by halftime the Lady Redskins trailed 30-24.

Rylie Hallman scored five points in the third to spark a 15-9 rally by the Lady Redskins to tied the game 39-39. But the Lady Indians pushed out to a lead early in the fourth quarter, and the two traded one- to two-point leads until the Lady Redskins were able to build a five-point lead, 50-45, with less than three minutes to play.

Hailey Contreras took over in the fourth quarter, knocking down a three and a basket and making eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to protect the Liberal lead. Hays attempted a rally but couldn’t land shots late, and the Lady Redskins opened the Western Athletic Conference season with a 59-50 win.

Contreras led Liberal with 26 points, 13 of those in the fourth quarter. Hallman scored 13.

“This was the first time we trailed at half this season,” Liberal coach Brandi Fowler said. “We have a lot of respect for Hays. They are a tough opponent, and they work hard.”

The Class 6A No. 4 Lady Redskins (6-0) will travel to Garden City tonight to face the Lady Buffaloes (4-4).
