TURPIN, Okla.—A slow start shooting did not stop the Turpin Lady Cardinals from claiming their second-straight win of the week over a Beaver County foe. The Lady Cardinals defeated Beaver 62-18, Tuesday night, then rallied from an early 12-point deficit to defeat the Forgan Lady Bulldogs 62-42, Friday night.

Forgan built the 14-2 lead to start the game as Turpin did not hit a field goal until Tatum Boyd’s three went in with 1:30 left in the first quarter. Turpin was just 1 of 20 from the field in the first quarter and trailed Forgan, 15-5.

But Turpin turned up the heat defensively and Boyd got hot from beyond the arc, hitting three more threes in a minute-and-a-half stretch, the last capping a 15-1 run that put Turpin up 17-15 with two minutes left in the half. The Lady Cardinals still led 22-19 at the half.

“We missed some shots early and I think it affected our game in other ways,” Lady Cardinals Head Coach Travis Smalts said. “We really didn’t play well in the first half except for the last three minutes. Too many stretches when we’re not good. We finally got some shots to go and then seemed to help the rest of our game, but we have to be able to perform even if our shots aren’t falling.”

Turpin stretched their lead to start the second half with a 9-0 run, highlighted by Kymper Post’s second three, to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 31-19, two minutes in. Shelbi Moses scored six straight for the Lady Cardinals as the two teams battled back-and-forth with Turpin taking a 39-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Forgan’s Anna Lancaster kept the Lady Bulldogs within reach with three baskets in the first half of the fourth quarter and cut the Turpin lead to just six (47-41) at the midway point of the fourth. Turpin’s Moses matched her with three scores of her own over the same stretch.

Turpin’s Abby Buller and Megan Weber took turns scoring as Turpin dominated Forgan, scoring then the next 11 and finishing the game on a 15-1 run to win by 20.

“We were sloppy,” Lady Bulldogs Head Coach Rob Lancaster said. “A lot of that is lacking confidence and basketball IQ. We're just learning. We have to find ways to generate more offense and make better decisions. Early on, they were missing shots, but when they started hitting it was only a matter of time. We tried to extend it as far as possible, but we didn’t execute very well.”

Turpin finished the game 19-44 from inside the arc, 6-20 from outside, and 6-15 from the line. Forgan was 12-42 from inside the arc, 3-12 from outside, and 9-13 from the line.

Shelbi Moses finished with a game-high 23 points on 10 of 23 shooting, after a 0-for-8 start. Tatum Boyd went 4 for 8 from three and finished with 14 points off the bench. Abby Buller added 9, 7 in the fourth quarter. Kymper Post and Megan Weber each had 6.

Forgan was led by Anna Lancaster’s 16 points on 5 of 18 from the field and 6 of 7 from the line. Kinley Kirkhart and Kamryn Ott each added 8.

Turpin (8-6) will take on Beaver (0-13), Thursday evening, in the first round of the Buffalo Tournament. Forgan (4-8) will host Balko (11-3), Tuesday.
