Liberal dug another deep hole in the first quarter against Guymon, Okla., Tuesday in The Big House, but they were able to keep the game competitive most of the way despite suffering a 65-48 loss.

Turnovers continued to plague the Redskins early, and Guymon took advantage of errant passes that were pushed in the lane despite having defenders in the path. By the end of the first quarter, the Redskins trailed 21-5.

Liberal only scored six points in the entire first half in the first game with the Tigers, but the Redskin offense responded in the second quarter for 13 more points. Still, the Redskins trailed 37-18 at the half.

Liberal began to chip away at the hefty Tiger lead and flirted with cutting it to single digits on several possessions, but the Tigers maintained a double digit lead of 46-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Guymon started to take the air out of the ball in the fourth, but the Redskins continued to push hard. Despite the effort, Liberal never got the lead to single digits.

Zayden Martinez led the Redskins with 15 points. Brooks Kappelmann scored 11 points, and Izzy Garcia-Rotolo scored 10.

“The first half was disappointing,” Liberal coach Keenan Thompson said. “We turned it around in the second half for one of the better halves we’ve had all season.”

Liberal (2-13) travels to Hays (8-7) Friday and then travels to Goodland (8-8) Monday.
