After a season of disappointing losses, the Redskins took the court Thursday in their season finale and gave the Dodge City Red Demons a game that went down to the wire. Liberal trailed by three in the final 30 seconds and three chances to tie the game on their final possession, but each miss and rebound was met by another miss and rebound until Dodge City rebounded after the third straight three-point miss, and after a foul with 1.5 seconds to play, Dodge City escaped with an 86-81 win over the Redskins.

Carson Chamberlain led Liberal with 25 points. Brooks Kappelmann scored 18, Zayden Martinez scored 17, and James Feiser had 13. All four will return next season.

“I can’t complain,” Liberal coach Keenan Thompson said. “We wanted the win, but it was a fun game, a memorable game, and there was no doubt from anyone in the gym they left every last ounce they had on the floor.”

The loss dropped Liberal to 2-18 on the season which left them short of the 16-team cutoff to qualify for the playoffs.
