The Lady Redskins improved on last year’s No. 7 seed in the Class 6A West Division to become the No. 2 seed this year, and in looking at their 16-3 record, they played quality opponents throughout the season.
Liberal’s one-point overtime loss to Andover in the Salina Invitational Tournament championship came against a team who finished the season 18-2 in Class 5A and is the No. 2 seed in the West.
Liberal’s two other losses came to Dodge City, and while the Lady Red Demons finished the season 10-10, they did earn the Western Athletic Conference title. Liberal and Dodge each had 6-2 records, but Dodge lost to Great Bend and Hays while the Lady Redskins dropped both games against the Lady Red Demons.
By seeding, it is possible the Lady Redskins and Lady Red demons could face off one more time.
Liberal is the No. 2 seed from the West. Derby claimed the top spot with an 18-2 record.
The Lady Redskins will face the 15th seed Junction City after rough 3-17 season.
Liberal defeated Junction City 61-21 in the first round of the Salina Invitational Tournament earlier this season.
Wichita Southeast is the No. 7 seed and will also have a rematch from a game earlier in the season in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs when they host the N0. 10 seed Dodge City Lady Red Demons. Southeast hosted Dodge City Dec. 17 in an early-season match-up and defeated the Lady Red demons 51-39.
If Liberal knocks off Junction City for the second time this season, the Lady Redskins will play the winner of the Southeast-Dodge City game. While Southeast is the clear favorite, their losses on the season have come against quality opponents including Bishop Carroll twice.
But if the Lady Red Demons pull off the upset, Dodge City would return to the Big House Saturday after two previous meetings.
Liberal lost 32-29 Jan. 13 and 35-32 Feb. 23.
If there is a third game, the winner will advance to the State Tournament.
