Liberal hosted Western Athletic Conference leader Hays Tuesday for a pair of conference games, and after an early rout, the Lady Redskins showed some fight in Game 2 but ended the day with two losses.

Hays and Liberal were relatively close through the first three innings in Game 1 with the Lady Redskins trailing 4-1.

But a disastrous fourth inning allowed 12 runs to score for the Lady Indians, and the Lady Redskins dropped the opener by run rule, 16-1.

The Lady Redskins managed four hits in the loss form Maedeen McClure, Jenna Ormiston, Zoey Torres and Madalyn McCarter. Torres knocked in Ormiston in the first inning for Liberal’s only RBI.

Ormiston pitched three innings and allowed 11 runs, seven earned, on nine hits and one walk while striking out two.

Taylor Harding came in relief and pitched one innings and allowed five runs on five hits and one walk.

In Game 2, Hays started where they left off, pushing three runs across the plate in the first inning, all with two outs.

Liberal generated a run in the bottom of the first, but Hays added two in the second and three in the third to take an 8-1 lead.

But the lady Redskins broke through in the third and scored four runs to cut the lead to 8-5.

Hays added a run in the fourth, but the Lady Redskins rolled their momentum from the third and continued to belt out hits. The Lady Redskins tied the game and then took a 10-9 lead.

But the Lady Redskins couldn’t hold the lead. Hays scored seven runs in the fifth, chasing Zoey Torres from the circle and bringing Ormiston back to finish the game.

Liberal added a run in the fifth, but Hays scored three more in the sixth to secure the 19-11 win.

Liberal had 14 hits in the loss, and the Lady Indians had 23.
