For five-and-a-half innings, the Liberal Redskins appeared to be close to advancing to the Regional championship Tuesday, but a disastrous sixth inning led to a six-run rally for Wichita Heights and a 7-4 loss for the Redskins, ending their season at 10-11.
Wichita Heights scored a run in the first inning, but the Redskins tied the game 1-1 in the third.
Both pitchers kept the bases clean until the fifth inning when Aidan Schwindt led off with a triple.
Brooks Kappelmann reached on a walk, and Zayden Martinez followed with an RBI single to left to score Schwindt.
Alex Schwindt then hit a blooper to shallow right center to score Kappelmann and give the Redskins a 3-1 lead.
Landen Martinez hit a grounder for an out, but Zayden Martinez scored, and Liberal had a 4-1 lead.
Kappelmann shut down Heights in the bottom of the fifth, but in the sixth, Kappelmann allowed a run in the sixth and reached the pitch limit with two runners on and two outs.
Zayden Martinez took the mound but could not get an out while hitting two batters and giving up a walk. Liberal then misplayed a pop fly, and a wild pitch allowed another run to score, and Liberal trailed 7-4.
Liberal had a runner on in the seventh but could not score.
