TOPEKA — For the first time in 20 years, the Liberal Redskins started the season 3-0 after a 51-13 win over Topeka Thursday.
The Redskins controlled the line of scrimmage all night, opening holes for Redskin runners and protecting quarterback Brooks Kappelmann, and the Angry Red defense bottled up the Trojan running game.
Zayden Martinez had seven receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Xavier Porras ran for two touchdowns, and Aidan Schwindt ran for a touchdown and caught a pass for a touchdown.
Ivan Moreno also had a five-yard run for a touchdown.
“We moved the ball around pretty well,” Liberal coach Bryan Luetters said. “We have to be able to run it even when the other team knows we re going to run it. And we did that tonight.”
Liberal had 296 yards rushing and 235 yards passing for 531 yards of offense to move to 3- 0.
“We told them, ‘You want to do something never done in your lifetime, you have a chance tonight,’” Luetters said. “But we have a lot higher aspirations than 3-0.”
