L&T staff report
It was never a matter of if but when. Sophomore Shamari Lewis was unstoppable in The Garden Tuesday and scored 26 points to lead the Lady Redskins to a runaway 64-28 win.
The Lady Redskin press wreaked havoc on the struggling Lady Buffaloes, and those turnovers turned into points for Liberal.
Liberal had a 10-3 lead after the first quarter, but they quickly ran up the tally in the second period to take a 31-13 lead at halftime.
Liberal pushed the lead to 54-20 at the end of the third quarter, which enacted the running clock in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Redskins coasted to the 64-28 win.
In addition to the 26 points scored by Lewis, Hailey Contreras added 11.
While the Lady Redskins continued to climb in the standings, the Redskins continued a pattern of their own — starting strong but fading late.
Much like the previous game with Great Bend, Liberal took an early lead on the Buffaloes, 14-5 and continued to lead 16-10 after the first quarter.
But the Buffaloes rallied in the second quarter to take a 27-22 halftime lead.
Garden City pulled away in the third quarter and connected on 10 three pointers in the game, and Liberal fell 60-47.
Liberal will host Hays Friday with first on the line for the Lady Redskins.
