GUYMON, Okla. — What appeared to be a possible rout turned into a grueling battle that needed overtime before the Class 6A No. 2 Lady Redskins were able to avoid an upset with a 49-44 win over the Guymon Lady Tigers.

Aubrey Warden provided an early spark for the Lady Redskins, scoring the first six points for Liberal.

Machia Mullens scored the next six, and Katie Horyna added a bucket, and the Lady Redskins had an early 14-7 lead.

Liberal continued to build on the lead in the second quarter, and after an Audrey Gilmore three was followed with a Mullens basket, the Lady Redskins had a 23-9 lead.

Guymon responded with a 7-0 run that included a three, and after Mullens connected on a late basket, Liberal had a 25-16 halftime lead.

But the Lady Tigers continued to chip away, and the Lady Redskin offense went cold in the second half. Guymon opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run to cut Liberal’s lead to 27-24.

Liberal pushed the lead back to seven before the Lady Tigers ended the third quarter trailing 31-26.

The Lady Redskins pushed the lead back to six, but the Lady Tigers used long-range shots to narrow the gap, and after hitting their third three pointer in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers tied the game 35-35.

The Lady Tigers took a 37-35 lead after a pair of free throws with 2:10 to play in regulation, but a baseline jumper by Gilmore with 1:50 to play tied the game.

After a defensive stop, the Lady Redskins held for the last shot but could not get it to fall, and the game went to overtime.

Horyna started with a drive to the basket for two points, and after a defensive stop, Warden knocked down an inside shot that gave the Lady Redskins a four-point lead .

Guymon had a chance to cut the lead at the free throw line but missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Horyna was fouled with 41 seconds to play and hit both free throws.

She added two more free throws 10 seconds later, an the Lady Redskins had a 45-37 lead with 31.8 seconds to play.

Mullens and Ashley Carrillo would each hit two free throws, and the Lady Tigers scored seven points in the final 24.1 seconds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Liberal’s early overtime lead, and Liberal escaped Guymon with a 49-44 win.

Mullens led the Lady Redskins with 14 points. Warden and Horyna each had 12.

Liberal moved to 16-0 with the win.

“We didn’t play super well in the second half,” Liberal coach Carter Kruger said. “We got up 14 and made mistakes. We had some turnovers, but we finished the right way. Once it got to overtime, you could tell by looking in the kids’ eyes, the game was ours.”

The Lady Redskins will host Senior Recognition at 6 p.m. Friday when they face Hays. A Liberal win guarantees at least a share of the WAC title.
