The Bee Jays traveled from Denver to Derby for a Tuesday clash with the former Jayhawk League foe, and Liberal came away with a 16-6 run-rule win in eight innings.

The Bee Jays erupted for seven runs in the second inning that started with a Wilson Erhardt walk followed by a Wyatt Grant home run for a 2-0 lead.

Derby appeared to be able to stop the damage after giving up a hit to Aidan Shepardson and getting the next two Bee Jays out.

But Caeden Trenkle walked and Jack Malone followed with an RBI single to score Shepardson.

Kade Brewer walked to load the bases, and Cayde Ward followed with a grand slam to center for a 7-0 lead.

Derby scored a run in the fourth after starting pitcher Aaron Funk allowed a walk and an RBI double to cut the lead to 7-1.

Funk allowed another walk to lead off the fifth, and Derby followed with a home run to cut the lead to 7-3.

Brady Cox relieved Funk and allowed the bases to get loaded before recording the final out of the inning.

Both teams scored three runs in the sixth to make the score 10-6, but the Bee Jays used another home run by Erhardt in the seventh to score three more runs along with an RBI single from Ward, and the Bee Jays had a 14-6 lead.

AJ Folds and Malone each added RBI singles in the eighth to give the Bee Jays a 16-6 lead, and Eric Heiman kept the Twins form scoring in the bottom of the eighth to enact the run rule.

Ward had five RBIs in the win, and Malone had five hits. Folds had three hits.

Funk allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in four innings while striking out seven.

Cox allowed three hits and three runs, and Heiman pitched two-and-two-thirds no-hit innings.

UPDATE — Liberal is adding a pair of home games against the Liberal All Stars for Thursday and Friday. Games begin at 7 p.m. Friday's game is sponsored by National Beef and is also Host Family Recognition night.
