redskincolorThe Liberal Redskin freshmen made the short trip to Southwestern Heights Tuesday evening to take on the junior varsity Mustangs.

The Skins battled it out in the elements but fell short 20-6. Liberal showed promise early in the wet, cold, windy Mustang Stadium. Missed opportunities early would hurt Liberal, missing three early shots downfield that slipped through Redskin fingers.

The first points of the night came late in the first with Liberal pinned back inside their five. A botched handoff led to a safety en route to an 8-0 first quarter.

Heights would punch in one more this time through the air to head into the locker room up 14-0 over Liberal.

The opening kickoff of the seocnd half was returned for a touchdown by Liberal’s Haret Huerta who went 65 yards for the score on the squib kick. Liberal reached the red zone twice before running out of downs into the wind.

Standout performers would include Huerta with the lone Redskin score.

“Brooks Kappelmann performed well delivering many catchable balls while stepping into pressure,” Liberal coach Rustin Watt said. “Aidan Schwindt had two catches on the rainy evening, almost breaking one big if not for a Mustang shoestring tackle up the sideline.”

Blake Miller led the Liberal defense at rush and middle linebacker along with promise shown from the young defensive tackle Marcus Tilford.

The Liberal Frosh/JV will travel to Dodge City this Monday for their WAC opener.
