DODGE CITY — The Lady Redskins entered the Sub-State tournament as the underdogs after losing the final four matches at the Western Athletic Conference tournament, and that forced the Lady Redskins to face the top seeded Hutchinson Lady Salt Hawks in the first round of Sub-State Saturday in Dodge City.

The Salt Hawks proved to be too strong at the net, rejecting several Liberal kill attempts, and the Lady Redskins couldn’t match Hutchinson with blocks, and the Lady Redskins ended the year with a 25-19, 25-22 loss.

The Lady Redskins battled tough to start the first set, and the two teams traded points until Hutchinson was able to create a small lead an 13-10.

The Lady Redskins never regained the lead and never tied the set the rest of the way, and Hutchinson took a 25-19 win.

The Lady Redskins were down to their last set, but instead of palying close early, Hutchinson jumped out to a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Redskins fought back, but a ball hit over the net was called out of bounds late in the match that would have allowed the Lady Redskins to pull within one.

Tow points later, the Lady Salt Hawks appeared to have made the same shot, but it was not called out of bounds.

Liberal kept it close late, but the point spread was too wide, and the Lady Redskins ended their season with a 25-22 loss.

Liberal ended the year 14-18.

Garden City knocked off Dodge City in the other Sub-State opener and the Lady Buffaloes advanced with a 26-24, 18-25, 25-18 win over Hutchinson.

Liberal struggled all season against Garden City with four of their 18 losses coming at the hands of the Lady Buffaloes.

The loss ended the high school volleyball careers for seniors Shatarrika Ross, Milly McClure, Logan Dodge, Nohemi Gomez, Savanna Hebbert, Aubrey Warden and Ren Watt.

The Lady Redskins are expected to return two seniors for next season including Bree Horyna, one of Liberal’s leading outside hitters.
