Aubrey Warden erupted for 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Redskins to a 42-26 win over Hays Friday in The Big House.

Warden had a frustrating start to the season while she fought through foul trouble and finding quality shots.

But Friday she was able to dominate in the paint with point-blank-range shots as well as put-back baskets.

The Lady Redskins continued to feed Warden rather than shoot from the perimeter. Instead of focusing on the three-point shot, Liberal pushed the ball inside to Warden. The Lady Redskins only made two threes, their lowest total of the season.

But they didn’t need the outside shot with Warden dominating both sides by connecting on shots and rebounding on the defensive end.

The Lady Redskins trailed midway through the first quarter 6-4, but Warden tied the game with a shot in the lane.

Warden made another basket late in the period to force a 10-10 tie, and Ashely Carrillo hit one of Liberal’s two three-pointers with time running out in the first

quarter to give the Lady Redskins a 13-10 lead. Carrillo opened the second quarter with another basket, and Warden hit three straight shots for the Lady

Redskins to push Liberal to a 21-14 lead.
Freshman Elle Hatcher delivered a basket inside to

extend the lead to 23-14 at half.
The last time the Lady Redskins played Hays before

the holiday break, Liberal only allowed one second half point. But the Lady Indians made their first shot of the second half. Still, the Lady Redskin defense didn’t allow any easy shots for Hays, and Warden followed with a basket before sophomore Rylie Hallman made Liberal’s next two baskets, and the Lady Redskins had a 29-20 lead.

Warden added two free throws and another basket late in the third, and the Lady Redskins jumped out to a 33-20 lead.

The Lady Redskins continued what would be a 13-0 run by scoring the first three baskets of the fourth quarter with two buckets from freshman Hailey Contreras and a three from Reece Hay that gave the Lady Redskins a 40-20 lead.

The Lady Indians scored six points late in the period but only managed 12 points in the second half, and the

Lady Redskins moved to 6-0 on the season, 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, with a 42-26 win.

Warden led the Lady Redskins with 18 points. Carrillo had seven, and Hallman had six.

“We were happy to see Aubrey Warden play well inside,” Liberal coach Brandi Fowler said. “That’s something we’ve been working on and something we need. You are going to have nights when the three is not going to fall, and you aren’t in position to take as many, and we will need to rely on our inside game as well as our outside game.”

Even though Hays scored 12 second half points instead of just one, Fowler believed the defense still performed.

“We did a better job of communicating on defense tonight compared to playing them before Christmas,” she said. “But we have to minimize mistakes. There were way too many turnovers. We can’t give it away like that. We also talked to the girls about making them take a tough shot. If they make it, tip your hat. If not, go get the rebound.”

The Lady Redskins will try to keep their record perfect on the season Tuesday when they travel to Garden City to face the Lady Buffaloes.
