DODGE CITY — Liberal battled for every point they made Friday in Dodge City, but too many missed shots and turnovers allowed the Lady Red Demons to build a second quarter lead, and the Lady Redskins couldn’t recover in a 45-36 loss.

The Lady Redskins kept pace with Dodge City in the first quarter with free throws from Aubrey Warden and tough play from Ashley Carrillo who scored an old-fashioned three-point play and then hit a deep shot for three. Halley Payton added a three late in the quarter, and the Lady Redskins had a 14-13 lead.

But the Lady Redskins went cold in the second quarter and only made two shots — a three from Reece Hay and a pair of free throws from Bree Horyna.

While the Lady Redskins struggled, Dodge City was able to maintain the pace they set in the first quarter and added 14 points including two three pointers, and Liberal’s one-point lead turned into an eight-point halftime lead for Dodge City, 27-19.

Dodge City opened the second half with seven straight points to jump out to a 15-point lead, 34-19, and the Lady Redskins missed four straight free throws to help the Lady Red Demons extend the lead.

Liberal finally hit two free throws from Warden with 2:37 to play in the third quarter, and Carrillo added a pair of free throws and a basket to cut Dodge City’s lead from 15 to nine at the end of the period, 34-25.

Liberal went on another scoring drought to start the final quarter and did not add a basket for three minutes.

Warden hit a basket and was fouled with 3:15 to play, and she made the free throw to cut Dodge City’s lead to six, 36-30.

But Liberal went on another three-minute scoring drought while Dodge City extended the lead back to 12, 42-30.

Warden hit a basket and a three pointer in the final 39 seconds, and Hailey Contreras added a late free throw for the final point in the 45-36 loss.

Warden led the Lady Redskins with 13 points, and Carrillo had 10.

The loss dropped Liberal to 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference, but Carrillo said the Lady Redskins are trying to play to enjoy the game.

“We are just trying to have fun with no more pressure on us,” she said. “I’m sure the next game will be even better to watch.”

Last year, Carrillo played with Div. 1 players Machia Mullens and Katie Horyna, but now she is filling the leadership role.

“It’s a lot of pressure, but I am going to play my game,” she said. “Everything I learn I put it in the game.”

The Lady Redskins will play Abilene Thursday in the first round of the Salina Invitational Tournament.

Liberal will remain on the road for five more games before returning to The Big House Feb. 9.
