HUGOTON — Liberal saved its best for last Wednesday in Hugoton, opening up an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter before holding on for a 58- 53 win to give the Hugoton Lady Eagles their first loss of the season. Ashley Carrillo started slow but finished strong, scoring nine of her 14 points in the fourth quarter. Hugoton started on a 5-0 run before Hally Payton knocked down a three and Aubrey Warden hit a shot in the lane, and bree Horyna capped a 7-0 run for the Lady Redskins with a put-back bucket, and the Lady Redskins had a 7-5 lead. But the Lady Eagles answered, and by the end of the period Hugoton had a 12-11 lead.

Liberal used the three-point shot to kill Hugoton’s momentum twice in the second quarter. Payton drained a thee to force a 14-14 tie early in the quarter, and Hailey Contreras knocked down another gametying three midway through the quarter. Liberal took a 21-19 lead after a baseline jumper form Logan Dodge, but the Lady Eagles forced a 23- 23 tie at half. Hugoton built a 29-27 lead early in the third quarter, but missed free throws started to take its toll on the Lady Eagles.

Mikyn Hamlin missed a pair of free throws in the period that could have given Hugoton a three-point lead, and after back-to-back threes from Reece Hay and Carrillo gave the Lady Redskins a fourpoint lead, Hugoton cut the lead to two with a basket and had a chance to take the lead when Hamlin was fouled shooting a three with 0.3 seconds to play in the third quarter, but she missed all three shots, and the Lady Redskins led 38-36. Contreras knocked down two threes early in the fourth quarter, and Carrillo hit back-to-back baskets to give the Lady Redskins their largest lead of the game, 51-43, with 4:02 to play.

But the Lady Eagles rallied with a 7-0 run to cut Liberal’s lead to 51-50. During the run, Hugoton missed three more free throws, and Carrillo finally ended the drought for the Lady Redskins with a basket for a 53-50 Liberal lead. Hamlin had a chance to cut the lead to one with 42.6 seconds to play, but she missed both free throws, and the Lady Redskins made five of six free thows in the final 21.3 seconds to secure the 58-53 win. Carrillo and Warden led the Lady Redskins with 14 points each, and Horyna had 10. Hamlin led the Lady Eagles with 17, Gina Vos scored 15, and Summya Adigun had 11. Liberal (14-3) will return home to host Great Bend (6-9) for Homecoming Saturday.
