HUGOTON — Six first-quarter three pointers delivered a haymaker tot he Liberal Redskins, and they never recovered in a 78- 53 loss to Hugoton on the road Wednesday. Embry Williams delivered an early three for the Redskins, and the two teams played to an early 5-5 draw before the Eagles started to light it up from the outside. After three long-range shots from Hugoton, Liberal trailed 15-7 before Alex Lopez answered with three.

But Hugoton responded with back-to-back threes to take a 21-10 lead before Lopez knocked down his second three of the quarter. But Hugoton answered with their sixth three of the period to jump back to an 11-point lead before Shay Kerr scored the final four points of the period to cut Hugoton’s lead to seven. Lopez hit another three midway through the second quarter to cut the lead to six, but the Eagles knocked down two more threes in the next minute to push the lead to 34-24. AJ Ramirez cut the lead to eight, but Liberal didn’t score for the next three minutes, and Hugoton went on a 7-0 run to take a 41-26 lead.

The Eagles continued to take advantage of the Redskin defense early in the second half and stretched the lead to 53-35. Lopez added another three for the Redskins, but Hugoton was able to extend the lead to 60-40 by the end of the quarter. Liberal cut the lead to as low as 17, but Hugoton responded with a 9-0 run to jump out to a 69-43 lead, and with three minutes to play Hugoton enacted the running clock with a 75-45 lead.

Liberal shaved five points off the lead against the Hugoton reserves for the 78-53 final. Lopez led the Redskins with a career-high 15 points, and Kerr had 14. Williams scored 13 in the loss. Liberal (5-12) will host Great Bend (4-11) for Homecoming Saturday.
