The Seymour Rogers seventh graders earned a much-needed Middle School Western Athletic Conference win Thursday while the Apache eighth graders faltered and may have cost themselves a position in seeding for the MSWAC tournament. Jesse Gomez had a career night against Kenneth Henderson, and he scored nine points in the first quarter to give the Apaches an 11-4 lead. Kenneth Henderson knocked dow a three in the second quarter to narrow the Apache lead, but Gomez continued to be a dominating force in the paint, and Jovanny Lopez also contributed a pair of baskets, and the Apaches had a 21-9 lead at halftime.

Seymour Rogers picked up the pace in the third quarter and pushed the lead to as high as 18 before the Falcons used a pair of three pointers to narrow the gap, but the Apaches still extended the lead before the end of the third quarter to 36-19. But the Apaches cooled off in the fourth quarter, and the Falcons attempted a comeback mostly thanks to Jess Long who scored 11 points in the final period for Kenneth Henderson, but he didn’t receive any scoring support, and the Apaches only scored three points in the final quarter. Still, the Apaches had a big enough lead to come away with a 39-30 win. Gomez led the Apaches with 20 points.

Lopez scored 12. The Apache eighth graders played shorthanded with Hudson Rice nursing an injury, and the lack of a big man in the paint showed. The Apaches struggled to push the ball into the lane and instead settled for long range jump shots. Those shots weren’ falling, and Kenneth Henderson built an early 9-4 lead. But the Apache defense stopped pressing at half court and settled in to a half court game, and the Falcons struggled to get quality shots.

The Apaches only allowed one basket in the second quarter, but they also struggled to get quality shots. Still, the Apaches trimmed the lead by outscoring the Falcons 5-2 in the period, and the Apaches trailed 11-9 at halftime. The gane continued to be a defensive battle in the third quarter, and fouls started to mount for the Apaches, sending the Falcons to the line. The two teams eachs cored five points in the period, and Seymour Rogers trailed 16-14. Kenneth Henderson built a 19-14 lead before the Apaches rallied with a basket from Adan Amador, and with two minutes to play Amador connected on a three to tied the game 19-19.

The Apaches had possession and a chance at a lead, but they didn’t score in the final two minutes, an the Falcons made a basket and four free throws to knock off the Apaches 25-19. Amador led the Apaches with six points. Damian Rios and Gael Ruvalcaba each scored five in the loss. The Apaches will host crosstown rival Eisenhower Monday
