Ashley Carrillo was six points away form beating Great Bend by herself Saturday night. The standout junior guard dominated the second half, scoring 19 of her 24 points after the break and guiding the Lady Redskins to a 69- 24 win. The Lady Redskins started quick and never looked back. The Lady Redskins opened the game with a 13-0 run with shots from Bree Horyna, Aubrey Warden and Carrillo. Great Bend didn’t score their first basket until 2:40 remained in the first quarter, and Horyna quickly responded with a basket and a three to push the Lady Redskins to an 18-2 lead.

The Lady Panthers added a pair of baskets before the quarter ended, and freshman Hailey Contreras added a three for the Lady Redskins for a 21-6 lead. The Lady Redskins defense continued to make scoring difficult for the Lady Panthers in the second quarter. Great Bend managed to score only five more points before half, but the Lady Redskins continued to find ways to score including inside shots from Horyna and Warden and deep shots from Logan Dodge and Horyna. By halftime the Lady Redskins had a 35-11 lead. Liberal reached a 30-point lead moments later with a transition basket from Carrillo, but the Lady Panthers stopped the bleeding and was able to play even with the Lady Redskins the rest of the third quarter. Hay added another three for the Lady Redskins before Carrillo took control in the transition game by scoring Liberal’s final eight points of the period, and the Lady Redskins ended the quarter with a 54-24 lead. With the 30-point lead, the running clock was enacted for the fourth quarter, and Carrillo started the final eight minuted with bac-toback baskets.

Carrillo added another breakaway basket and a three pointer before Liberal coach Brandi Fowler cleared the bench, and Elle Hatcher completed the scoring for the Lady Redskins with a pair of free throws, and the Lady Redskins cruised to the 68-29 win. Carrillo led Liberal with 24 points. Horyna scored 15 in the win, and Warden added 10. Limiting Great Bend to only 29 points was a key going in to the game. “We focused on not allowing them to score 39 points like the first time,” Fowler said. “We wanted to limit their opportunities, and crashing the boards and giving them only one chance when they were able to shoot. We had 20 defensive rebounds.” The Lady Redskins were also able to make the extra pass. “We had 19 assists, so we are doing a great job of sharing the basketball,” Fowler said. “Hopefully we continue to move the ball well. Teams will scout us, and we will need to continue to play good team basketball, and good things will happen.”

Liberal was coming off a big win against Hugoton earlier in the week, handing the Lady Eagles their first loss of the season. “As coaches, we took it head on,” Fowler said. “We talked about the big win in Hugoton. We wanted to make sure we focused on one possession at a time, and the girls responded, and we were proud of their effort.” Liberal will end the season playing Garden City and Dodge City, two loses earlier in the season. “I look back at those games and see how much we have grown and improved, how much work they have put in,” Fowler said. “We have two hard opponents. They want to come in here and beat us. We are going to put a lot of work into it. We are excited.”
