Dodge City started with a three pointer and never trailed in defeating the Liberal Redskins for the third time this season in the first round of Sub-State, 68-52.

The Redskins fell behind early and tried to battle back from being down seven in the first quarter, but the Red Demons pushed to an 11-point lead before the Redskins were able to knock down some shots and cut the lead to 28-21 at halftime.

AJ Ramirez opened the second half with a quick basket to cut the lead to five, but the two teams traded baskets for the next two possessions, and after Liberal had the lead down to 32-27, Dodge City went on a 7-0 run and pushed the lead out further with a buzzer-beating three at the end of the third quarter.

Liberal never recovered and struggled in the final quarter while Dodge City built a 24-point lead.

The Redskins trimmed the lead late but could not overcome the huge deficit in a 68-52 loss.

Liberal began the year with uncertainty when Ryan Petty turned in his notice shortly before the beginning of the school year to make the move to Augusta.

That left the Redskins basketball program without a head coach, and Trace Haskell stepped in to accept the position on a one-year basis with no plans of continuing beyond that.

Still, Haskell was able to earn seven wins at the helm of the program including three wins in the Western Athletic Conference which  was good enough for a tie for third.

The loss ended the season for the Redskins at 7-14, 3-5 in the WAC and was the last game for six seniors including Malcolm Wiltshire, Alex Lopez, AJ Ramirez, Kwami Williams, JJ Lewis and Embry Williams.

The Redskins will rely on their junior class next season including Hunter Huskey, Aldo Avalos, Shay Kerr, Logan Miller and Carson Gilmore.

The search for the next head coach will fall on new Activities Director Kerri Miles who was recently hired to fill the role beginning in the fall.
