A quick start helped the Southwestern Mustangs earn a 60-55 win over the Forgan Bulldogs Tuesday.
Raul Alvarado scored nine of his 14 points in the first quarter, including a three and a pair of free throws, and the Mustangs outscored the Bulldogs 17-10 in the period.
But the Bulldogs battled back in the second, including a pair of threes from Ordonez, and the Bulldogs took a narrow advantage in the period, 20-19, but the Mustangs headed to the locker with a 36-30 lead.
After scoring seven in the second quarter, Juan Garcia continued to carry the load for the Mustangs in the third, scoring eight the Heights’ 14 points, and for the Bulldogs, Cunefare took over in the second half, scoring nine of Forgan’s 14 points, and the Mustangs were abel to hold their six-point lead, 50-44.
The tight game continued in the fourth, and while the Mustangs couldn’t pull away, the Bulldogs couldn’t erase the Mustang lead, and Heights was abel to hold on for the 60-55 win.
Garcia led the Mustangs with 19 points followed by 14 by Alvarado. Jesse Olvera added eight, Efren Mercado had seven, and Leonel Gonzalez and Ruben Torres each scored six.
Cunefare led the Bulldogs with 27 points, and Bryer had 13. Ordonez scored eight, Martinez had three, and Long and Williams each had two.
