Seward County battled Independence to the final tick on the clock Monday in the first round of the Region VI tournament, but a late foul by Seward allowed the Pirates to earn the win at the free throw line 63-62.

The Saints and Pirates exchanged the lead several times in the second half before the Pirates used two long-range three pointers to erase a six-point Seward lead in the final two minutes, and Independence took a two point lead in the final minute.

But the Saints tied the game and forced a turnover, and Seward scored two more points with only 3.3 seconds to play to take a 62-60 lead.

The Pirates inbounded the ball and dribbled across half court before attempting a long range desperation three-point shot. But a Saint fouled on the shot, and Independence was awarded three free throw attempts with only 0.7 seconds to play.

The Pirates made all three, and the Saints threw a long pass for a desperation shot at the buzzer that missed.
