The Liberal Redskins had a slow start facing a stiff wind Thursday at Redskin Field, but a late surge in the first half pushed the Redskins to a 5-1 win over Lamar, Colo.

The Redskins controlled the ball for most of the game, but despite having the ball early, the Redskins couldn’t get a clean shot on the Lamar goal.

The Savages had few opportunities on Liberal’s side of the field, but after a foul was called form about 35 yards away form the goal, a long shot was taken and floated over the head of the Liberal goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead for Lamar.

Liberal continued to push the ball around the Lamar goal, but the Savages kept their entire roster near the box to cut off passing lanes for the Redskins.

Liberal finally received a centering pass that was headed into the Lamar goal to tie the game, and a few minutes later the Redskins took the lead with another goal from a shot inside the box.

Lamar attempted to keep the deficit at one goal in the final two minutes of the first half, but the Redskins were able to take a shot from about 20 yards away for another goal with only three seconds remaining in the first half.

Liberal had the wind advantage in the second half and was able to add two more goals while preventing Lamar from having any serious shot opportunities in the second half, and the Redskins moved to 2-5 on the season with a 5-1 win.

Liberal will host Thomas Moore Prep at the Gary Cornelsen Sports Complex Tuesday.
