The Liberal Redskins spent a lot of time on defense Thursday night at Redskin Field, but despite only having a limited number of shot opportunities, the Redskins took advantage of the few shots they had to earn a 2-1 win.

Liberal was playing shorthanded with several starters missing the game due to COVID-19 protocols.

But the younger players stepped up with a focus on defense.

Hays took advantage of the shorthanded Redskins and kept the pressure on the Redskin defense.

But freshman goalkeeper Gael Ruvalcaba made save after save to keep the Indians from running away early.

With the limited experience for the Redskins on the field, they had were unable to use their traditional offense of dribbling the ball up the field. Instead they employed a Hail Mary strategy of launching a deep kick and trying to get a Redskin to outrun the Hays defender.

With two seconds remaining in the first half, Angel Muñoz was able to find the back of the net and give the Redskins a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the second half a deep pass reached Muñoz, and he was able to kick the ball past the Hay goalkeeper and give the Redskins a 2-0 lead.

But the Indians scored with 12 minutes to play after pounding the ball at the Liberal goal al night, and Ruvalcaba had to make several saves in the final 10 minutes to secure the 2-1 win.

Liberal will now play in the North Cup Tournament in Wichita.
